In my research using Survey Monkey I hoped to find out what people liked and looked for in a music magazine so it would help me understand and think about the way I want my magazine to look and the sort of stuff I would like to have in my magazine. I also wished to research the magazine titles that are widely available so I could try to find a gap in the market for a new type of hybrid magazine. You can see the types of questions I asked the public to see the responses and answers I got back. Go to this link to see my survey:
What I gathered from these graphs were that not many people read or buy music magazines often. Majority of the participants were 16 and male and the main music genres they listen to is rap, pop, hip-hop or other. I found out from my research that to make someone buy a music magazine the front cover image is vital. A lot of my participants had the favourite colour blue which may suggest that they like natural primary colours and soft colours. Majority of the participants classed themselves as aspires and or mainstreamers.
From my results I have concluded that it wasn't very helpful in deciding how my magazine should look and be displayed but it did help me with knowing what people looked for before buying a magazine.
Being unsatisfied with the limited value of my survey I did some qualitative research by asking lots of students at college about their tastes in music, fashion and design. Picking people for my focus groups meant that I could chose the people I wanted to target with my magazine. Their feedback proved much more useful in deciding what types of bands to cover and also in deciding that I should feature successful as well as up and coming acts.
